MIT students Oliver Yeh, Justin Lee, and Eric Newton, sent a camera into earth's stratosphere and took breathtaking pictures of space with a budget of $150. Using only off-the-shelf items, a camera, a prepaid Boost Mobile cellphone with GPS tracking, a weather balloon, and helium were they able to assemble a launch vehicle to achieve such a great feat. The launch, named Project Icarus, took place on September 2nd at 11:45am. The camera traveled 17.5 miles up and landed 20 miles away from the launch site. The spacecam had to be under 4 lbs in order to pass FAA regulations.
Visit their site and see what they're working on now. They are kind of busy with homework and labs, so it may take a couple of days for them to reply to your emails.
